Mid and small-cap stocks extend recent steep losses

Both these indices underperformed the barometer index, BSE Sensex, which was down 182.69 points or 1.19% to 15,196.65.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE, 1,823 shares declined and 853 shares advanced. A total of 108 shares were unchanged.

Top losers in the BSE Mid-Cap index were, Jain Irrigation Systems (down 9.99%), UCO Bank (down 9.46%), Wockhardt (down 9.21%), Godfrey Philips India (down 8.60%) and Jai Corp (down 8.51%).

Top losers in the BSE Small-Cap index were, Alchemist (down 20%), GSS Infotech (down 19.98%), Midvalley Entertainment (down 11.22%), ICSA India (down 10.38%) and Usher Agro (down 9.98%).

The BSE Mid-Cap index had underperformed the market over the past one month until 19 December 2011, sliding 9.52% compared with the Sensex's 6.06% decline. The index had also underperformed the market in past one quarter, falling 18.83% as against 8.16% fall in the Sensex.

The BSE Small-Cap index had underperformed the market over the past one month until 19 December 2011, falling 10.29% compared with the Sensex's 6.06% decline. The index had also underperformed the market in past one quarter, sliding 23.09% as against 8.16% fall in the Sensex.
