Key benchmark indices extended losses to hit fresh intraday low in morning trade. At 10:18 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 54.52 points or 0.21% at 25,787.40. The Nifty 50 index was down 22.10 points or 0.28% at 7,820.65. Selling was limited to large-cap stocks as mid and small-cap stocks edged higher.
The BSE Sensex rose 29.97 points, or 0.12% at the day's high of 25,871.89 in early trade. The BSE Sensex fell 72.11 points, or 0.28% at the day's low of 25,769.81 in morning trade. The Nifty 50 index rose 4.55 points, or 0.06% at the day's high of 7,847.30 in early trade. The Nifty 50 index fell 24.95 points, or 0.32% at the day's low of 7,817.80 in morning trade.
The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market was positive. On BSE, 1,070 shares rose and 754 shares fell. A total of 152 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.39%. The BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.48%. Both these indices outperformed the Sensex.
In overseas markets, Asian markets were trading on a mixed note as investors grappled with the prospects of higher US borrowing costs and slower global economic growth. The main US stock indexes finished barely changed yesterday, 19 November 2015, after weakness in the health-care and energy sectors stunted gains.
Realty shares were mixed. Prestige Estates Projects (up 1.91%), DLF (up 0.77%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (HDIL) (up 0.71%), D B Realty (up 0.64%), Unitech (up 0.42%), Anant Raj (up 0.29%), Sobha (up 0.29%) and Indiabulls Real Estate (up 0.25%), edged higher. Phoenix Mills (down 0.11%), Godrej Properties (down 0.28%), Parsvnath Developers (down 0.59%), Oberoi Realty (down 0.89%) and Sunteck Realty (down 1.51%), edged lower.
Most FMCG shares edged higher. Tata Global Beverages (up 3.29%), Dabur India (up 0.79%), Hindustan Unilever (up 0.74%), Britannia Industries (up 0.70%), GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (up 0.63%), Jyothy Laboratories (up 0.53%), Colgate Palmolive (India) (up 0.39%) and Marico (up 0.04%), edged higher. Bajaj Corp (down 0.18%), Procter & Gamble Hygiene & Health Care (down 0.22%), Nestle India (down 0.63%) and Godrej Consumer Products (down 1.27%), edged lower.
