Ten construction workers were killed when the elevator they were riding in broke down, and crashed from 32nd storey of a building to the ground in Istanbul late Saturday.

The accident occurred at a construction site of the 42-floor Torunlar Center in Sisli's Mecidiyekoy neighbourhood. It was claimed that the elevator was once broken 15 days ago, and that the repair work was awaiting budget funds, Xinhua reported.

Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu said eight officials who were responsible for the accident were taken into custody by the police.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu described the workers' deaths "very painful and very saddening".
