At least 11 people were killed and 32 others injured Sunday when an overloaded mini bus fell into a deep gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
A police officer told IANS that the mini bus was going from Ramban to Banihal, when the driver lost control of the vehicle near Battery Chashma, 160 km from here.
Six passengers died on the spot.
A rescue operation was launched by the civil administration and the army and the injured passengers were taken to hospital. Some passengers with serious injuries were airlifted to Jammu for specialised treatment.
Traffic on the highway was halted for several hours till the rescue operation was completed.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed shock over the accident and announced financial relief to the kin of the deceased passengers and for the treatment of those injured.
