Not only within India, Delhi University is also popular among foreign students, with the varsity receiving 2,098 application forms for different undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, an official said Thursday.
The maximum number of applications is for the four year undergraduate programme.
"A total of 1,259 students have applied for the undergraduate programme and 609 applications have been received for the masters programme," Amrit Kaur Basra, head at DU's foreign registry office told IANS.
Also, 107 applications have been received by the foreign registry office for the Ph.D. programmes.
Other applications are for advanced diploma, diploma, and certificate courses and 36 for M.Phil. programmes.
The maximum number of applications are from Tibetan students at 475, followed by 237 students from Nepal.
The deadline for submission of applications for foreign students was June 10.
However, last year 248 students from Tibet were admitted to the varsity and 222 from Nepal.
"Students from South Korea also come to DU in large numbers. The Korean House facilitates their staying, so it is not difficult for them. But for other outstation candidates, especially girls, we try to provide them accommodation," added Basra.
In the last academic session 54 students from South Korea were admitted.
There are separate boys and girls hostels for international students, with colleges like Hansraj, Hindu and Lady Sri Ram College for women (LSR) providing them with extra facility.
Interestingly, the varsity has received applications from African students wanting to study Hindi and Sanskrit with French students wanting to study Punjabi.
DU reserves five percent seats for foreign students in all of its colleges.
