At least 78 students were killed and 45 others injured Monday in an explosion in a secondary school in northeast Nigeria, as students gathered for morning assembly before classes began, a police official said.

The explosion went off in Potiskum, a commercial hub of northeastern Nigeria's Yobe state, National police spokesperson Emmanuel Ojukwu told Xinhua.

The spokesperson said the number of casualties could rise and rescue teams were still at the scene.
