With apparent reference to Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he had discussed with his visiting British counterpart Theresa May the challenge to fight cross-border terrorism and the need to take action against its sponsors.

"I conveyed our deep concerns to PM May regarding cross-border terror and the need for the international community to take strong action against states that support and sponsor terrorism," Modi said in a joint media address with May here.

"We agreed that terrorism is not a limited security challenge. It moves across borders and affects the entire humanity."

The British Prime Minister, on a three-day visit to India with cooperation on defence and trade high on her agenda, said both nations faced the "shared threat of terrorism as individual countries, as partners, and as global powers".

"We have agreed to strengthen our cooperation, in particular, by sharing best practices to tackle use of internet by violent extremists," May said in her address.

Modi said during his meeting with May, they looked "at the full range of our partnership" and agreed to have "new dimensions, initiative to broaden the scope of our linkages".

"I encourage British companies to look at multiple opportunities in Indian defence sector."
