An ammunition depot was looted in Libya Saturday evening when dozens of gunmen stormed an air base, a senior Libyan army officer said Sunday.

The incident occurred in Bark Shati town, located 900 km from Tripoli.

"Dozens of gunmen stormed the air base and looted all the ammunition inside the storage, including ammunition for heavy weapons such as rockets and artillery," reported Xinhua citing southern district Libyan Shield commander Ahmed Al Hasnawi over the phone.

The attack occurred "with the complicity of number of military personnel assigned to protect the base", he said.
