Army personnel Havildar Babul Kumar Pateliya was killed on Friday in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh when a hand grenade got accidentally detonated during a training session, officials said.
"The incident took place when the jawans of Mahar Regiment in the local firing range were undergoing training this morning for placing grenades," Cantt Police Station in-charge D.N. Dwivedi told IANS.
Army officials said the soldiers were having battle inoculation practice when the explosive got accidentally detonated.
According to them, Havildar Pateliya had over 20 years of service, and is survived by his wife and a 13-year-old son. He hailed from Vijaynagar in Gujarat.
The condition of another soldier, who received injuries in the incident, was stated to be stable.
The army has ordered an inquiry into the incident, sources said.
