The Austrian government has begun to implement border checks at the border with Hungary on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Later in the day, the interior ministry announced border controls at border crossings to Slovenia would also be reinstated on Wednesday evening, Xinhua reported.
While the main effort will be concentrated in the east of the country, meaning Hungary and Slovakia, it said the south will also be monitored, inferring Slovenia and Italy.
Minister of the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner on Tuesday said the reinstated border controls are "an important signal to the world, that what has happened up to now cannot continue any longer" on an interview with television news program Zeit im Bild 2.
The decision was unavoidable in light of the "massive influx" of non-EU citizens, and was also in order to ensure public order and safety was not put in jeopardy, she said.
Mikl-Leitner said the Dublin Regulation would remain in effect, and asylum seekers stopped at a particular border would be sent to a country they first made an asylum application in, rather than simply be rejected entry into Austria.
