Bahrain is tightening control of its ports and screening travellers from Ebola-hit countries, as officials announced intensive training for healthcare workers, the health ministry said.

Though no Ebola case has been reported in Bahrain, the country has issued a guideline for all health care workers on how to diagnose and deal with suspected cases, Xinhua quoted Health Minister Sadiq Al Shhabi as saying.

The ministry has adopted standard precautions to be undertaken by patients and visitors at the country's main hospital, he added.

Meanwhile, visitors to Bahrain from Ebola-hit countries, such as Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria, are not granted entry visas.

Ebola virus is a severe, often fatal, illness that carries a fatality rate of up to 90%. According to UN figures, more than 6,500 people are believed to have been infected, and more than 3,300 died since the outbreak was confirmed in March.
