Beijing authorities set a limit on the number of shared bikes that can ply the streets of the Chinese capital.
The Standing Committee of Beijing Municipal People's Congress passed a regulation on Friday setting a limit of 1.91 million shared bikes on the streets of Beijing, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the new regulations, transportation authorities could designate off-limit areas for shared bikes. Shared bike operating companies should update information regarding the number of bikes and their location on a government Internet platform.
It also said that damaged bikes be recycled and public deposits returned to users on demand. Online security should be guaranteed. The companies must also take responsibility for recycling them and returning defunct ones to warehouses.
The regulation added that shared electric bike businesses would not be developed.
The aim of the campaign is to regulate the chaos caused by the around two million bikes that circulate in the Chinese capital, authorities said.
