A West Bengal school teacher Sunday committed suicide after a kangaroo court allegedly asked him to pay fine over an illicit affair with a woman, police said.
The incident happened in Sagardighi area of Murshidabad district, some 240 km from here.
"The body of Dilip Mondal was recovered today from his house. Prime facie, it appears he committed suicide by consuming poison," said a police officer.
The victim's family alleged that Mondal took the extreme step after a "salishi sabha" (kangaroo court) Saturday night asked him to pay Rs.1 lakh in fine when they held him guilty of having an illicit affair with a married woman.
"We have received reports of a 'salishi sabha' and we are looking into it," the officer added.
