Striker Edinson Cavani could leave Uruguay's Copa America squad after the arrest of his father for allegedly crashing his vehicle under the influence of alcohol and causing the death of a motorcyclist.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said on Tuesday that a decision has not yet been made on whether the Paris Saint-Germain football player will continue in the ongoing tournament in Chile, reports Xinhua.

"It is a personal issue regarding Edinson who was not involved in anything but is nonetheless affected. We talked to him to extend our support to him. He is affected as anyone who would have such a thing happen to a member of their family," Tabarez said.

Uruguay's next game is a quarter-final clash against hosts Chile here on Wednesday.

Cavani's father Luis is being held in police custody after the crash in Salto on Monday night. The 19-year-old motorcyclist was taken to hospital with severe head injuries and died early on Tuesday.

Tabarez said he would continue to talk to Cavani to see if the forward was in a state of mind to play.

"What will happen in between now and the game is we can assess how the player has been affected. We will train and in the coming hours we will continue to talk to him," the coach said.
