A court Thursday framed charges against Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam, who has been accused of using "indecent language" during a television debate against TV actress-turned-politician Smriti Irani.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jay Thareja framed the notice against Nirupam under charges dealing with defamation and word or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
The court was hearing a defamation suit filed by Irani, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP. The court has posted the matter for April 19, 2014.
While discussing the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections last year on a TV channel, Nirupam mocked Irani as a former dancer who had entered politics only some years ago.
On Jan 8, the trial court had taken cognizance of the criminal defamation complaint filed by Irani against Nirupam for allegedly using "derogatory and indecent language".
