One person was killed and another injured on Tuesday due to heavy shelling by Pakistan Rangers in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

They also fired at 12 Indian positions on the International Border, police said.

"A civilian identified as Sanjay Kumar was killed due to shelling by Pakistan Rangers in civilian areas today (Tuesday) morning," a police officer told IANS.

The injured has been identified as Sandeep Chowdhary.

Kumar, 28, son of Bachan Lal, was a resident of Mirpur Kona in Pargwal village of Akhnoor in Jammu district. His body has been shifted to a mortuary.

Pakistani troops also fired at 12 forward posts of the Border Security Force in Kanachak, Pargwal and R.S.Pura areas of the International Border in Jammu district.

"They used mortars, automatics and small arms. The BSF retaliated using same caliber weapons. Heavy shelling and firing exchanges are underway in the area," he said.

BSF personnel noticed suspicious movements near a border outpost in Kanachak area during the night and fired to "thwart any possible infiltration attempt after which it was quiet till morning".

"But at 6.05 a.m., Pakistan Rangers resorted to unprovoked firing at the BSF border outpost and later used mortar shells to target civilian areas and BSF border outposts," he added.

On Monday, the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Rangers violated ceasefire at four places on the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border.
