Friday was February's wettest day in the capital. Traffic was severely affected due to the heavy rains and consequent flooding of the city roads.

"Friday recorded February's heaviest rain in the capital which was 9.7 mm," said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

After Thursday's overnight rain, the capital woke up to a cloudy morning Friday. Though there was only slight drizzle during the first half of the day, heavy rain was recorded in many places later.

Many people were caught off-guard due to the unexpected rain.

"The rain was just out of the blue. Since it was a cloudy day, I expected drizzle not downpour," said Komal, a resident of south Delhi.

Long queues of cars were seen on Ring Road and other places.

"It took me two hours to reach Delhi from Noida where it's a 40-minute-drive," said Anirrudh Sharma.

An IMD official said there was nothing unusual about the rain.

Friday's maximum temperature was recorded four notches below average at 21.3 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 12 degrees Celsius.

The Met department also forecast spells of light shower Saturday morning.

Saturday's maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 21 and 13 degrees Celsius, respectively.
