The national capital Sunday saw rain and chilly winds that brought down the temperature to 16 degrees Celsius, seven notches below the season's average. Residents said the rains made them feel that winter had finally arrived.
Rain occurred in various parts of the capital, catching many people off-guard.
"The wait of winter was over today (Sunday). I had planned to step out with friends but the sudden rain forced me to stay at home," Delhi University student Avantika Seth told IANS.
An official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the sudden change in weather was due to western disturbance and snowfall in the hilly regions.
November and the first week of December were unusually warm.
The weather department also forecast a clear Monday but said rain was likely to occur in the evening.
"There will be an overcast Monday morning which will later become clear. Cold wind and rain are however likely in the evening," said an IMD official.
The maximum and the minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 17 and 11 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Rainfall recorded till 5.30 p.m Sunday was 3.8 mm, while the minimum temperature was 14.2 degrees Celsius, six notches above the season's average.
Saturday's maximum temperature was 20.8 degrees Celsius, two notches below average, while the minimum settled at 10.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above average.
