In a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alliance partner Shiv Sena's President Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said the recent demonetisation is disastrous and could seriously backfire on the government.
"We are not opposed to eradicating black money from the country's economy... This is a bold measure. We object to the manner in which it has been done without giving adequate time to the people," Thackeray said.
He said the common masses have been undergoing huge suffering, waiting for hours in long queues to exchange their old currency notes, and one man died in a queue in Mumbai.
"Who is responsible for his death? Will the people who have taken this decision (of demonetisation) accept responsibility for his death?" Thackeray demanded.
He was referring to the shocking incident of 73-year-old Vishwanath Vartak suffering a cardiac arrest and dying outside the Srtate Bank of India branch in Mulund where he was waiting in a long queue to exchange some demonetised notes Friday afternoon.
