Mass diabetes check-up camps, aiming to detect cases which go unnoticed, will be organised on September 25, 2016, in 200 cities across the country covering over a lakh persons.
The camps, a joint initiative of IIT Mumbai, Gadge Diabetes Care and Rotary International, will be organised under the banner of CURED (Can You Really Escape Diabetes), according to a statement from the organisers said on Monday.
According to medical statistics, diabetes has the potential to become one of the largest killer disease in the next 15 years. India ranks among the top three countries with the highest number of diabetics.
"A free diabetes camp will be organised for more than 200 places in Mumbai, including metro stations, religious places and societies. A total of 20 camps will be organised in Jabalpur, 20 camps in Ajmer, 40 camps in cities of Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Indore, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Gurgaon and Noida," the statement said.
"People can have free diabetes check-up along with the free consultation of doctors at every camp," it added.
"Prevalence of diabetes has more than doubled for men in India (3.7 per cent to 9.1 per cent). It has also increased by 80 per cent among women in India (4.6 per cent to 8.3 per cent)," said Pradeep Gadge, Director of Diabetes Care Centre.
"China leads in numbers followed by India. It is high time that people need to be made aware of this dreaded disease and patient education can go a long way in curbing this diabetes epidemic," Gadge added.
"Education can make a huge change in the area of diabetes. Hence, when IIT students approached me for this campaign, I readily agreed. We named it as CURED campaign," Gadge said.
