Accusing other political parties of creating a communal divide, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Varun Gandhi Monday warned people against "allowing the country to go into wrong hands".
"In the next general elections, the pride and respect of India is at stake. We have to save the country's honour and not allow it to go into the wrong hands," Gandhi said at a party programme here.
Ridiculing other political parties, he said that while they call the BJP communal, they themselves drive a wedge between communities.
"While BJP is often called a communal party, it is the others who are creating a communal divide. For petty political gain, they discriminate between communities. We cannot allow such things, which are eventually harming the nation," the BJP parliamentarian said.
He also called upon parties to shun their narrow political interests for the sake of what was in the national interest.
"When the country's interest is at stake, we should forget our political differences and come together. When five of our soldiers were killed by Pakistan, the whole country rose in protest in unison," Gandhi said, referring to last week's ambush in Kashmir.
On a two-day visit to the state, Gandhi is scheduled to visit Hooghly district's Singur and meet farmers who lost their land to the now-abandoned Tata Nano project.
