DU admission process to begin June 2

The admission process to the four-year undergraduate courses in Delhi University will start June 2, and from this year no extra eligibility criteria can be prescribed by any college, an official said Wednesday.

"From this year onwards no colleges will be able to impose extra eligibility criteria for the students. There will be one criterion of rules and merit as framed by the university," J.M. Khurrana, Delhi University's dean students welfare, said at a press conference here.

Besides, the students will also be able to mark their choice of colleges in the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) form. Till last year, the students could only select the courses of their choice.

The students can apply both online and offline and the last date for submitting the form is June 16.

"Like last year, there will be both online and offline form filling process, but we encourage students to go for online filling as it makes process easier for us," said Khurrana. To encourage online form filing, the university authorities slashed fee for those selecting this mode.

For general and OBC students, the form will cost Rs.100 and for SC/ST students it would be Rs.50. While for the offline process the general and OBC students will have to pay Rs.150 and the SC/ST students will pay Rs.70.

With Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) offering over 200 vocational courses, the varsity has also relaxed its admission norms for the students and provided them with varied choice of subjects.

Even if the candidate has had three vocational course, he can include them in his best of four subjects percentage. But a disadvantage the student will have to face is a deduction of 10 percent marks from the subject with highest marks.

"The other issue during admission process is the students want to study subjects they have not studied in the class 12, the candidate can do so, but in that case they will loose two percent from the aggregate best of four percentage," said Khurrana.

However, for students who wish to do honours in English and Hindi it is compulsory for them to have studied the subjects in schools. Similarly, the students wanting to pursue economics, should have had studies mathematics in their boards.

With these certain provisions, the admission to honours programme in science and maths remain the same.

"The first cut-off list will be out by June 24 and and three days time will be given to complete the admission process," said Malay Neerav, the university's media co-ordinator.

Similarly the second, third, fourth and fifth cut-off list will be out by June 27, July 1, 4 and 8 respectively.

The entrance examination for admission to various courses has been done away with, and admission will be purely on merit.

"This time an entrance examination will only be conducted for bachelor of management studies and all other entrances have been done away with," said Neerav.

Earlier, entrance used to be held for journalism courses, social work and for honours in Spanish, German, Italian and French.

Delhi University has 78 colleges with 54,000 seats in various courses. It was since last academic session that the four-year undergraduate programme was introduced.
