Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Adarsh Sein Anand died here on Friday.
Eighty one-year-old Justice Anand, who had been ailing for some time, breathed his last at his home due to age-related problems. He was discharged from a private hospital where he was treated for a lung problem.
Justice Anand had served as the CJI from October 10,1998 to October 31, 2001.
Well known for his chairmanship of the National Legal Services Authority, the former CJI had taken the initiative to establish Lok Adalats in every district of the country.
He had also authored several books, including 'The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir-its Development and Comments'.
Justice Anand also served as the chairman of the committee set up to examine the safety aspects of the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley condoled Justice Anand's death. He said he was saddened to learn about the death of Anand, who he said was known for making inexpensive justice accessible to people.
"Saddened by the demise of former CJI, Justice Adarsh Sein Anand, he was a visionary constitutional expert and known for making inexpensive justice accessible to people. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family, may God render peace to the departed soul," Jaitley said in a tweet.
