France's First Lady Valerie Trierweiler is worried that she will have to leave the Paris apartment she shares with President Francois Hollande if he chooses to stay with glamorous younger mistress Julie Gayet, a British daily reported Monday.

Trierweiler, who left hospital after eight days, was staying at a grace-and-favour presidential retreat in Versailles on the outskirts of Paris. She was said to be still "in shock" after revelations that Hollande had two-timed her with the 41-year-old actress for over two years, The Daily Mirror said.

Trierweiler, 49, is caught between "depression and rage", the British tabloid quoted Catherine Schwaab, deputy editor of magazine Paris Match, where Trierweiler works, as saying.

"Hollande didn't use his visit on Thursday to Trierweiler's hospital bedside to dump her, but he did tell his devastated partner that he needs more time. They agreed that she could wait in La Lanterne. But wait for what? Therein lies the problem. Imagine the anxiety."

France's respected Journal du Dimanche newspaper said Hollande's relationship with her was "over". French magazine VSD also said Hollande and Trierweiler had been living "separate lives" since November as rumours flourished of Hollande's secret trysts with movie star Gayet.

If Trierweiler's relationship with Hollande ends, she will also be asked to leave her Elysee Palace office.

President Hollande had earlier told media that "private matters should be treated in private" after details of his affair were published in France's Closer magazine 10 days ago.

Neither Trierweiler nor Gayet have made any formal comment since the claims were made public.
