Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday advocated the enhanced use of Information Technology (IT) to improve the transportation and logistic facilities in India.
"We know we can reduce congestion on our roads and can make commuting for our people economical and safer with enhanced use of IT," Gadkari said in his inaugural address at stakeholders meet held by IT for Parivahan Campaign here.
IT for Parivahan Campaign was launched by Vinit Goenka, a member of IT task force formed by the ministry to improve transportation in the country.
"We may borrow technology from the advanced countries till the time we develop our own. There is nothing bad in it," Gadkari said.
"Future of Smart Shipping and smart road networks envisioned by the government lies with the advanced use of technology in respective fields," he observed.
"That is the reason we are pushing for Digital India and other IT campaigns," Gadkari added.
In his address, Goenka opined that government's decision to adopt IT will not only increase the speed of implementation of infrastructure projects but it will also bring more transparency and accountability in functioning of various departments.
"We believe flagship programmes of the government such as Digital India, Start Up India, and public driven initiatives like IT for Parivahan can provide the solutions that our people are looking for," Goenka said.
The stakeholders meet was organised to facilitate policy makers' interaction with the micro and medium entrepreneurs of the IT industry in India.
