Thomas Schaaf will be the new coach of German football club Hannover 96, succeeding Michael Frontzeck, who resigned last week as coach of the Bundesliga side after the 0-1 defeat against Bayern 0-1 and ending second last in the standings.

"From the first minute of our talks I had the feeling that Thomas can completely identify with this task. His CV and his experience speak for themselves. He has worked successfully (as a coach) in the Bundesliga for decades," Hannover sporting director Martin Bader said, reports Efe.

Schaaf, 54, said he had positive talks with the officials of Hannover in the past days.

"I understand how difficult the task will be. Despite this, I am looking forward to this great challenge, along with the players, of avoiding relegation," he added.

The coach, whose commitment to the club runs until 2017, will be presented on January 4 after his first training session with the German club.
