The Haryana government will take strict action against those government employees and pensioners who will not pay electricity bills, an official spokesman said here on Wednesday.

He said it was noticed that some government employees and pensioners did not pay their electricity bill on time in violation of Rule 23 of the Haryana Civil Services (Government Employee Conduct) Rule 2016.

"A circular to this effect has been issued by the Chief Secretary, directing all the government employees and pensioners to make payment of outstanding electricity bills at the earliest and also adhere to the provisions of Haryana Civil Services (Government Employees' Conduct) Rules, 2016, failing which strict action would be initiated against the defaulters," the spokesman said.

Haryana has a notorious track record of people not paying electricity bills for years, leading to huge arrears of hundreds of crores of rupees.

In the last few years, the Haryana government and its power utility firms have tried to offer incentives to people to pay bills and get the previous pending bills waived. The consumers have also been issued warnings but that has not produced the desired result.
