To cater to the rising demand and provide better transport facilities for people of both states, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on Friday signed a Reciprocal Transport Agreement.
The agreement, signed in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, will facilitate buses of both the states to operate over 1.16 lakh km daily in each other's territories.
The agreement was signed during the inauguration ceremony of the 32nd Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, adjoining Delhi, on Friday. The agreement has been inked between both the states after 35 years to cater to the increasing demand.
Under this agreement, 423 buses of Haryana will operate 66,420 km daily in Uttar Pradesh covering 256 routes, while 522 buses of the UP government will be able to operate 50,034 km daily on similar number of routes in the other state.
As per the previous agreement, buses of Haryana were operating 10,362 km daily in the territory of Uttar Pradesh and likewise, UP buses were operating 8,116 km daily in the territory of Haryana.
Khattar said the agreement was important for the people of both Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as the states share a long border. He said it will boost economic activity as well.
Yogi Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have a lot of common things. "Both the states have been associated for thousands of years. Lord Krishna was born in Uttar Pradesh and he delivered the holy message of Gita in Haryana. Haryana residents will get the opportunity to visit various places at Ayodhya, Kashi, Gorakhpur, Mathura, etc. in Uttar Pradesh," Adityanath said.
Uttar Pradesh is the 'Theme State' of the Surajkund Mela this year.
