A day after their arrest for allegedly attacking media persons at an event in Kolkata, the Hindu Samhati chief and three of its activists were sent to police custody for two days on Thursday, a police officer said.
The four accused were arrested on Wednesday evening for assaulting the journalists at Esplanade after they tried to talk to members of a Muslim family who allegedly converted to Hinduism.
"The four were charged with attempt to murder (IPC 307), causing grievous hurt (IPC 326) and causing damage to property (IPC 427). They have been remanded to two days of police custody till February 17," a police officer said.
The event was organised on the occasion of the organisation's 10th foundation day.
After the event, political parties including the Trinamool Congress and the BJP condemned the attack on journalists.
Formed in 2008, the Hindu Samhati website describes itself as an NGO that is "the icon of hope to Hindus in West Bengal" and says it regularly monitors violence against Hindus in the state.
