Despite losing a sprint to the finish, athletics legend Usain Bolt said he is in better shape than he was last year when injury forced him to miss most of the season.

The Jamaican sensation was unable to catch up with Tyquendo Tracey while anchoring an exciting 4x100 metres finish against University of Technology (UTECH) at the 39th staging of the Gibson/McCook Relays over the weekend, reports CMC.

Bolt, however, conceded that he needs to get a lot more done if he has to perform to his usual standards this season.

"I am getting there. I am not perfect yet. I am in better shape than last season but I need a lot more work. My coach will now decide what else I need to focus on," said Bolt.

Bolt received the baton behind Tracey and despite making up significant ground, failed to overhaul his rival. However, he said that he has identified his weak areas as he prepares to defend his titles at the Beijing World Championships.

"I was happy with the result. It's always good to get back to the track to get some work in to see what it takes to get back on track," said Bolt.

"You always try to win every race but what I got from it is that I need more leg power. I will just keep working hard, continue working like I always do and bounce back and show the world that for me it's never over."
