The water level in some rivers in Uttar Pradesh which were in spate has started receding, an official of the Irrigation Department said on Wednesday.
The water level in other major rivers is stable and the embankments at most places, though they remain sensitive, are safe, he added.
"Officials are on high vigil and are continuously monitoring the embankments."
The situation at the Jauri Nagla dam at Ganga river in Budayun is normal and the breach at some places has been contained with the help of locals and officials, he said.
The Ganga-Mahawa embankment remains sensitive but the situation for now is under control.
The Chief Engineer (Gandak) said that embankments in the river Gandak at Kushinagar, Ballin and Azamgarh are safe and at most places Ganga and Ghagra rivers are in spate and flowing above the danger mark.
The Budhi Rapti and Rohini rivers are flowing above the danger mark at Maharajganj, Siddharthanagar, Gorakhpur and neighbouring Nepal.
The embankments at Rapti river in Gorakhpur are in a precarious situation, officials admitted and said patrolling is being done for now.
In Basti, Ghagra was flowing above the danger mark but the embankments are safe.
According to Chief Engineer (Saryu I), Ghagra was flowing above danger mark in Gonda, Barabanki and Bahraich.
Rapti river was flowing below the danger mark on Bahraich and Balrampur, while all villages and embankments in Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shahjahanpur and Sitapur were safe and that water in the rivers was receding.
