India enter second stage of table tennis Championships

India defeated Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey 3-0 in the first round match of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships at the Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

Soumyajit Ghosh spearheaded India's campaign. He gave a fine start winning his singles against Hugo Tupper in straight games 11-6, 11-3, 1-7.

Gujarat's Harmeet Desai and Devesh Karia, who made their maiden appearance together for India, played their roles to perfection, notching up straight games wins to keep the momentum on India's side.

Desai beat Jordan Wykes 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 while Karia defeated Joshua Band 11-5, 11-4, 11-9.

As for women's events, Indians led all the way to easily down Northern Ireland 3-0.

Mouma, who dropped a game to her rival Ashley Givan, caught up soon to win 3-1 while Manika Batra and K. Shamini had no such hiccups as they beat their opponents in straight games.

Mouma Das beat Ashley Givan 18-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-1.

She was then followed by Manika Batra who overcame Emma Ludlow 11-7, 11-8, 11-1.

K. Shamini was victorious against Emma McSorley 11-5, 11-0, 11-5.
