India Thursday said there was an urgent need to examine the recommendations of a judicial panel that visited Pakistani jails, in view of the deaths of two Indian prisoners, including Sarabjit Singh, following murderous attacks on them.

The India-Pakistan Joint Judicial Committee visited Pakistani jails from April 26 to May 1.

"Both sides also need to take stock of the measures currently in place for ensuring safety, security and humane treatment of prisoners in each other's jails," said a spokesperson of the ministry of external affairs .

He also said that India wants to "reiterate the offer made by us on May 3, calling for a meeting with the relevant Pakistani authorities to take immediate steps to enhance the safety, security and humane treatment of Indian prisoners in Pakistani jails."

Sarabjit Singh succumbed to grievous injuries on May 2 following a vicious assault on him in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail on April 26. Earlier, another Indian prisoner Chamel Singh had succumbed to injuries following a grievous attack on him in the same Kot Lakhpat jail in January this year.

On May 3, a Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay was brutally attacked in Jammu's Kot Bhalwal jail after an altercation with an Indian prisoner. He died early Thursday and his body was flown back to Pakistan in the evening.
