An Indian national was arrested at Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for trying to smuggle out gold moulded into the form of luggage handles.
The suspect was nabbed by customs officers at the airport on his way out to India, after he failed to declare the gold to the authorities, in a bid to avoid customs duty in India, the Gulf News reported Thursday.
While examining the luggage, custom officials realised that the suspect had removed the metal handle and replaced it with one made of gold.
The police alleged that the suspect was trying to avoid paying customs duty on the gold when he reached India.
Sharjah Police have warned Indian expatriates, not to indulge in activities that go against the laws of their country.
