A court in Britain has sentenced an illegal Indian immigrant to 20 months in jail followed by deportation for burgling a Sikh priest's house.

The Leicester Crown Court has awarded Harjot Singh Janda 16 months' rigorous imprisonment, four months' suspended prison sentence, and deportation after he completes all the sentences, the Leicester Mercury reported Thursday.

Janda reportedly ransacked the house of the priest, whose name was not mentioned in the report, in Spinney Hills in Leicester Oct 17 and made off with more than 10,000 pounds of jewellery and cash.

The priest was working at a nearby Sikh temple when the burglary happened and it was his wife who discovered the break-in.

Prosecutor Alan Murphy told the court that the closed circuit television (CCTV) footage showed Janda was with two unknown accomplices who were waiting in a nearby car.

Janda returned to the car with a bag and could be seen on the footage looking through the looted items within the bag, the court heard.

Proceedings to deport Janda were already under way when he broke into the priest's house.
