Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday that Iran's nuclear programme was "peaceful" and the country will continue with it.

Rouhani said Iran's nuclear activities were "within the directives of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and international regulations."

"Iran has not followed illegal actions and has not tried gaining nuclear arms," Xinhua quoted Rouhani as saying.

Iran and the P5 or the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the US, China, Russia, France and Britain -- plus Germany wrapped up a new round of expert-level nuclear talks in New York Wednesday.

The head of Iran's nuclear negotiating team Hamid Baeidinejad said the talks were "fruitful".
