A 'Car Free Day' on October 22, to which Delhi Police had objected citing movement of judges and VIPs, will be organised, Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung said on Tuesday.

Delhi's Transport Minister Gopal Rai thanked Jung after a meeting over the issue.

"As Dusshera is on October 22, police have to make a lot of arrangements on that day. We know that there will be extra efforts and strain on police. I have spoken to the police commissioner and joint police commissioner (Traffic) and they have agreed to make extra efforts on that day," Jung told reporters after the meeting.

"Car Free Day aims to make people understand that they should not drive their private cars, and should use public transport instead," Jung said.

Earlier, Rai said cars would not ply on that day on the Red Fort-India Gate stretch. Delhi is home to about 85 lakh vehicles.

However, Delhi Police objected to the event citing the movement of judges and VIPs, and the general rush that marks Dusshera.

The event will be held from 7 a.m. till noon when private vehicles will not be allowed.
