The Karnataka government on Tuesday appointed IPS officer H.S. Revanna as the new Deputy Inspector General, Prisons, a day after transferring incumbent D. Roopa to be the Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety here.

"Revanna of 2001 IPS batch is transferred with immediate effect and posted as DIG Prisons in Bengaluru from being DIG, Police Headquarters here," a state Department of Personnel order said.

Revenna will also be the Chief Superintendent of Bengaluru Central Prison in place of Krishna Kumar, who was transferred without posting on Monday.

In a related development, about 200 prisoners in the Central Jail on the city's southern outskirts protested in the premises, demanding recall of Roopa.

"They (inmates) staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the warden's office wanting Roopa to continue as DIG Prisons, as she had interacted with them recently and enquired about their welfare and facilities in the prison," a jail official told IANS on the condition of anonymity.

The state government also transferred Director General, Prisons, H.N. Satyanarayana Rao without a fresh posting, as he is set to retire this month-end.

Roopa and Rao were engaged in a public spat since June 12 over the alleged privileges given to AIADMK Sasikala, lodged in the women's cell of the central jail since February 15, after the Supreme Court upheld her conviction and sentencing by a trial court in a corruption case.
