North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was named chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea on the last day of the country's first party congress in 36 years.

Kim so far held the title of first secretary of the party, EFE news reported.

His grandfather Kim Il-sung was named "Eternal President" of the party, while his father Kim Jong-il was the general secretary of the most important government body in the country.

Kim Jong-un chaired the political conclave, held for the first time since 1980 and attended by nearly 3,500 delegates.
