Slum-dwellers of the city have a reason to smile - courtesy the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) that plans to develop a clutch of model slums with necessary amenities, an official said Saturday.
The initiative of the KMC, which is in the planning stage, seeks to provide proper sanitation, health care services and educational facilities in each model slum.
"The model slums will have health care centres, schools and drinking water facilities. We will ensure that the residents live in hygienic conditions," Mayor-in-Council (Slum Development) Swapan Samadder told IANS.
The KMC is looking for sites with good infrastructure to build prototypes.
With around 3,500 slums under its jurisdiction, KMC's prime objective will be to solve the problems of sewerage and drainage, Samadder said.
