Tennis stars Petra Kvitova and Angelique Kerber paid rich tributes to the retiring two-time Grand Slam winner Li Na of China, following her announcement of departure from the sport Friday.

World No.3 Kvitova identified Li Na as her good friend and someone from whom she drew inspiration.

"So sad to hear of the retirement of my good friend Li Na. I will miss practising with her, playing great battles against her and most of all I will miss seeing her smiling face and hearing her laugh. She was an inspiration and gave so much to the game," the Czech Republic left hander tweeted.

The reigning Wimbledon champion also put up a few on-and-off court photographs with Li Na.

Kvitova's eulogy came just after World No.8 German Angelique Kerber praised the Chinese's personality and undiminishing spirit.

"What a champion and an amazing person! She'll be really missed on Tour. All the best in your new life!!!" Kerber tweeted, also posting an on-court photo with Li Na.

Li Na announced her retirement after failing to overcome "chronic" injuries. The 32-year-old World No.6 won the Australian Open in January 2014 and the French Open in 2011.

However, she had not played since losing the third round of Wimbledon in June and after undergoing a knee surgery in July.
