New Delhi, April 26 (IANS) The amount given to landless poor for building homes will be doubled from this month, the government said Friday.

Earlier, Rs.10,000 was provided to the landless poor in rural areas for building a homestead. The amount has been doubled to Rs.20,000, Minister of State for Rural Development Lal Chand Kataria said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

The scheme for homesteads was launched Aug 24, 2009, as part of the Indira Awas Yojana for those below the poverty line who neither have land nor a house.

Around 10 percent of the population in India is homeless, according to government figures.
