Lawyers across western Uttar Pradesh struck work on Monday to press for their long-standing demand of a high court bench in Meerut.
They are also protesting the Samajwadi Party (SP) government's rejection of their demand and have decided to aggressively push it forward.
During the protest on Monday, they took out silent demonstrations and 'Prabhat Pheris'.
'Ucch Nyayalaya Sthapna Sangharsh Samiti' Spokesman Manish Singh said that the lawyers were agitated over Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's recent statement in the national capital that his government did not endorse the idea of a bench in western Uttar Pradesh and added that whenever he comes to Agra in future, lawyers will protest against him.
Office bearers of the umbrella group of lawyers demanding setting up of high court bench in western Uttar Pradesh also said that they will be holding its foundation day on December 19 in Agra and an action plan to take the agitation forward would be deliberated upon.
