The Lok Sabha on Friday adopted a resolution resolving to protect the democratic, socialist and secular character of the country at the end of two-day debate on "commitment to constitution".

The resolution said that the members will respect freedom and authority of constitutional institutions, uphold sanctity and supremacy of constitution and maintain probity in public life.

The resolution was read by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

"We do hereby solemnly affirm our commitment to the principles and ideals of the constitution, and resolve to uphold and maintain the sanctity and supremacy of the constitution; respect the constitutional institutions, their freedom and authority; protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of our country and its democratic, socialist and secular character; maintain transparency, probity and accountability in public life; dedicate ourselves to equality and social justice and contribute to the task of building a strong republic," the resolution said.

The members recalled with appreciation "the invaluable services rendered by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the chairman of the drafting committee of the constituent assembly and all its members in framing Constitution of India".

The members also remembered with gratitude "the commitment of Mahatma Gandhi, pioneering and monumental role played by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Maulana (Abul Kalam) Azad and other founding fathers of the constitution and their contribution in enabling us to give to ourselves the constitution on November 26, 1949 and having enacted it on January 26, 1950".

The house had special sittings for the past two days for celebrating "Constitution Day" as part of the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Ambedkar.
