A minor girl in West Bengal's Burdwan district was grievously injured in an acid attack allegedly by a local youth after her family refused his marriage proposal, police said on Monday.
"A school girl was attacked with acid at her home in Burdwan's Purbasthali on Sunday night. The mother of the girl also sustained a minor injury in the incident," said Y Raghuvamshi, sub-divisional police officer of Kalna in Burdwan.
The class eight student was reportedly attacked by a local youth after she did not respond to his love letter.
"The boy sent her a love letter but she did not respond to it. We also rejected his marriage proposal as my girl is only 12," said her mother.
The girl has been admitted to the Kalna Hospital with serious burn injuries in her face and eye.
"No formal complaint has been lodged yet. However, police have already detained the accused on the basis of a verbal complaint," the officer said.
