Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Friday lauded the Indian Army for conducting successful surgical strikes on terrorist launchpads across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement issued here, the former UP Chief Minister said the army had come true to its promise of revenge on perpetrators of Uri attack and should hence be appreciated.

She however chose to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi for delaying the military action, which she said, should have been done soon after the attack on the Pathankot air force base in January.

Mayawati also slammed BJP President Amit Shah's statement after the surgical strikes wherein he had said this was the "dawn of a new India". This statement has a political colour, she said, adding that a lot needed to be done in terms of securing the borders of the country and also to shore up internal security.

The BSP chief also said that the time was not to score political brownie points but to brace up for the new challenges that will come in wake of the surgical strikes on terror camps. She also said that the government and the people needed to be more cautious in such an environment.
