Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday asked his fellow legislators to adopt school in remote area of the state in the larger interest of the students' community.
"Education is a priority and important and every small contribution matters. I have adopted one school in Shohphria village and the Nongstoin MLA (Macmillan Byrsat) is now going to adopt one school in my (South Garo assembly) constituency," Sangma said.
"I request all legislators to help each other in this endeavour to make a difference and live by our own example," he asserted.
On Tuesday, Sangma drove to remote Shohphira village near Nongstoin, the district headquarters of West Khasi Hills, and inaugurated Shohphria Government Lower Primary School, which was renovated recently with Chief Minister's one and half month salary amounting to Rs. 3.14 lakh.
The school established in 1956 by the Presbyterian Church was taken over by the government after the creation of Meghalaya, carved out of Assam. The school had remained neglected for over two decades, with broken walls, no rooftop.
