At least four schoolchildren and one of their guardians died when a speeding car hit them here on Monday, triggering mob violence which left some police personnel injured.
The incident occurred in south Kolkata's Bishnupur area, police officer Swapan Chakraborty said.
Furious, a large number of people blocked the road and demanded that the driver and "drunk" fellow passengers of the car be arrested.
The situation got out of hand when police used canes to disperse the mob. The car was smashed and bricks were hurled at the policemen, injuring some of them.
"The crowd started hurling bricks from all directions when we tried to free the road and restore normalcy. Some of our officers got injured. The situation is still volatile," the officer said.
