City football giants Mohun Bagan have proposed the name of 1956 Melbourne Olympics Indian team skipper Samar Banerjee (Badru) for the country's fourth highest civilian honour - the Padma Shri.
A club statement said Tuesday that the proposal has been conveyed to President Pranab Mukherjee, Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Praful Patel.
The club rooted for conferring the award to Banerjee for "his excellence and contribution to the game of football".
Banerjee led India to a fourth place finish in the Melbourne Olympics -- the best showing of the side in the globe's biggest sports carnival.
