A farmer committed suicide in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district by consuming poison on Thursday because he could not clear his mounting debt, his family said.
Sudesh Yadav, 35, who was a resident of Karaiya Gujar village, consumed pesticides on Wednesday night and was admitted to a hospital where he died.
According to his relatives, Sudesh was trapped in debt trap. He also had to repay a bank loan. They alleged that some influential people in the village had fraudulently transferred his four acres of land in their name while money-lenders were hounding him.
Police officer Ravi Prakash Bhadoriya on Thursday told IANS: "We could not record Sudesh's statement as he was admitted in hospital in a critical condition. The motive behind his suicide is still unclear."
